Kathmandu — The Balen-led government is set to launch a free public bus service for women across the Kathmandu Valley starting July 17 (Shrawan 1), aiming to ensure safer, more accessible, and cost-free transportation. The initiative will begin with eight buses in its first phase, focusing on improving women's mobility for work, education, healthcare, and other daily activities while promoting safer public transport.
According to the government, the service will be expanded gradually based on demand and operational performance, with plans to increase the fleet to 125 buses. The buses are expected to feature modern safety measures, including CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, emergency support systems, and women-friendly facilities to provide a secure travel experience.
Officials said the long-term goal is to extend the free bus service beyond the Kathmandu Valley to other provinces if the pilot project proves successful. The government believes the initiative will reduce transportation costs for women, encourage greater use of public transport, and strengthen women's safety and participation in education, employment, and public life across the country.
